Short leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is associated with several manifestations of cardiovascular aging mainly atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Guest speaker, as part of the Interdisciplinary Medicine & Health Seminars: Athanase Benetos (Department of Geriatric Medicine, Université de Lorraine, Nancy, France.)

Findings of the clinical studies Athanase Benetos conducted during the last 5 years, support the tenet that a comparatively short LTL exists prior to the clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis, reflecting mainly higher LTL attrition rates during the first years of life. These data indicate that telomere length, which is mainly determined early in life, is a strong determinant of cardiovascular diseases developed late in life. Ongoing cellular studies of his group aim to identify the mechanisms by which telomere length can modify cell function, leading to accelerate arterial aging and atherosclerosis.
